Where and how to vote?
Primary method: In Sweden, voters must cast their vote at a designated polling station. The voting card contains information about the electoral district, the polling station’s name, address, and opening hours.
Alternative methods: Advance voting is available approximately three weeks before election day and continues until the election day itself. It occurs at different polling stations within a municipality or elsewhere.
- Voting from abroad
Voting by courier is also possible. An individual other than the voter can transport the ballot to the polling station or an early voting location. Eligible couriers include spouses, cohabitants, children, grandchildren, parents, relatives of spouses or cohabitants, rural postal workers employed by PostNord AN, employees at a remand center, or a penal institution. It is not possible to vote online or by proxy.
Polling day requirements: In addition to the voting card, voters must provide an identification card for verification on election day. If the voter lacks an identity document, another individual can verify their identity. This person must be at least 18 years old and able to produce an identity document
Who can vote?
General. An individual must meet the following requirements to vote in EP elections in Sweden:
- be at least 18 years old on the day of the election; and
- either be a Swedish citizen or be recorded in the Swedish Population Register
Mobile EU citizens. EU citizens must be resident in Sweden to vote there. They must be registered in the Swedish Population Register.
Registration requirements.
Nationals. There is no registration requirement. Swedish citizens are automatically registered to vote by virtue of their inclusion in the Swedish Population Register.
Swedish nationals residing outside Sweden may vote from abroad. They may vote by post or vote in person in advance at a Swedish embassy or consulate which has organised voting facilities. Casting a postal vote requires special postal voting materials, which can be obtained from the Swedish Election Authority, a municipality, or a Swedish embassy or consulate. Postal voting materials are distributed no earlier than 45 days before election day, and voting at embassies and consulates can take place no earlier than 24 days before election day. However, Swedish nationals cannot vote on election day from abroad.
Mobile EU citizens. Mobile EU citizens must be recorded in the Swedish Population Register and give notice of the wish to be listed in the electoral roll. At the beginning of 2024, the Swedish Electoral Authority will send a letter to all EU citizens registered in Sweden asking to confirm whether they wish to be registered on the Swedish electoral roll or be removed from it. The letter will contain a form that should be sent to the County Administrative Board where the EU citizen lives.
Exclusions
Sweden does not place restrictions on voting by a person convicted of a criminal offence. There are no restrictions on the right to vote for people with disabilities.
