Where and how to vote?

Primary method

Voters in Denmark have to vote in person at a specific polling station based on their home address. The designated polling station is indicated on the ballot.

Alternative methods

Postal voting is also possible in Denmark. The special ballot for advanced voting must be retrieved at any Citizen Service Centre in Denmark no earlier than 6 weeks and no later than 3 working days before election day. Voters who due to illness or disability are unable to go and vote, can also vote from home by applying to their local citizen service center at least 12 days before election day. Voting by proxy or online is not possible in Denmark.

Polling day requirements

When voting in-person or by post, voters are required to bring an ID card, passport, or driver’s licence, and they are asked to sign after the vote . The same requirements apply to both nationals and mobile EU citizens.

Who can vote?

General

An individual must meet the following requirements to vote in EP elections in Denmark :

Mobile EU citizens

EU citizen s must be registered as residing in Denmark in the Central Person Register (CPR) .

Registration requirements

Nationals. Nationals do not need to register in advance to vote, as it is done automatically by the authorities. However, in case of a recent change of home address, it is advisable to check with the national election authority whether registration on the voting list is correct.

There are some limitations of Danish nationals voting abroad. Danish v oters residing abroad in an EU country have to register with the municipality of Copenhagen. They can apply in person or by sending your application to Københavns Kommune ( folkeregister@kff.kk.dk) . Danish voters residing outside the EU can only vote if they will return to Denmark within two years of their departure. Danish citizens who work abroad for a Danish institution or company, students and those working for a Danish charity organisation may maintain their right to vote under certain conditions. In order to vote, they have to apply for registration on the electoral list in the Danish municipality where they lived in before moving out of the country. Once on the electoral list, they can vote in person or by mail via the Danish embassies and consulates abroad.

Mobile EU citizens. Mobile EU citizens need to register in the electoral roll by presenting an application in the municipality where they are resident. They usually have to register at least five weeks before election day. This can be done online: (https://elections.im.dk/Media/638430782849544503/ENG%20Ans%C3%B8gningsskema%20online.pdf).

Exclusions

Non-Danish citizens who have been expelled from Denmark by a final judgment or administrative decision do not have the right vote in the EP elections in Denmark. Denmark does not impose restrictions on the rights of prisoners to vote. People living in the Faroe Islands or Greenland are ineligible to vote in the election to the European Parliament because the Faroe Islands and Greenland do not form part of the EU.
