Where and how to vote?
Primary method.
Voters who live in Hungary have to vote in person in the polling station allocated according to the voter’s address and as indicated in the letter of notification.
Alternative methods
Registered voters with an official address in Hungary can also submit a request online (www.valasztas.hu) in order to vote at another polling station.
Registered voters without an official address in Hungary can vote by post and return the ballot paper so that it arrives at the National Elections Office at least 48 hours before election day. Voting by proxy or online is not possible in Hungary.
Polling day requirements
Voters in Hungary need to present their valid identity card, passport or driving licence, as well as their Hungarian residents card (also known as ‘lakcímet igazoló hatósági igazolvány’, or simply ‘lakcímkártya’). The same requirements apply to both nationals and mobile EU citizens.
Who can vote?
General
An individual must meet the following requirements to vote in EP elections in Hungary:
- hold Hungarian citizenship or be a citizen of another EU Member State;
- be at least 18 years of age or 16 years of age and be married; and
- not be excluded from voting.
Mobile EU citizens
EU citizens must be legally resident in Hungary in order to be able to vote there.
Registration requirements
Nationals. Hungarians with an official address in Hungary do not have to register in the electoral roll as it will be done automatically. A registered voter is included in the registry for 10 years, after which an extension of the registration can be requested. Hungarians without any official address in Hungary must register on the electoral roll in order to vote.
Hungarian citizen living abroad may vote:
- if they have their domicile in another EU Member State and maintain an address in Hungary, they may vote at a polling station set up by the Hungarian embassy or consulate of the country where they reside (otherwise if they have no address in Hungary they cannot take part in Hungarian lists).
- if they have their domicile in a non-EU country and maintain an address in Hungary, they may also vote at a polling station set up by the Hungarian embassy or consulate of the country where they reside
- if they have their domicile in a non-EU country and have no address in Hungary, they can vote by post.
To do so they must register on the electoral register maintained by the Hungarian embassy or consulate abroad.
Mobile EU citizens. Mobile EU citizens residing in Hungary and wishing to vote in European elections there need to register on the electoral roll. They can do so via email or at the local election Office, as well as online (www.https://magyarorszag.hu/szuf_szolg_lista?kategoria=VL.hu)
Exclusions
Nationals and mobile EU citizens who have been disqualified from voting by a judicial decision cannot vote in Hungary.
