Where and how to vote?

Primary method: Slovak voters may vote at the polling station in the area of their residence where they are registered in the electoral register.

EU citizens residing in the Slovenia may vote at the polling station assigned to the area where their residence is registered in Slovenia.

Alternative methods: The right to vote may also be exercised in the following ways:

  • Voters who are unable to come to the polling station in which they are entered in the electoral register because of illness may vote at home if they notify the municipal electoral commission no later than three days before election day.
  • Voters with a disability may also vote by post on a permanent basis if they notify the district electoral commission and submit a decision on the recognition of their disabled status from the competent authority. This notification is valid until it is withdrawn by the disabled person.
  • Voters in custody, a penal institution, hospital or social care institution may vote by post provided they notify the district electoral commission no later than 10 days before the day of the vote.
  • Slovenian nationals residing abroad may also vote by post from abroad or at a Slovenian diplomatic or consular office or at a special polling station in Slovenia.

It is not possible to vote online or by proxy.

Polling day requirements: Voters must establish their identity by producing an identity document or by other means upon arrival at the polling station.

Who can vote?

General. An individual must meet the following requirements to vote in EP elections in Slovenia:

  • be a Slovenian national or a citizen of another EU Member State;
  • be at least 18 years of age on the day of the elections;
  • have not been deprived of the right to vote.

Mobile EU citizens. EU citizens must be resident in Slovebia in order to vote there. They must either hold a permanent residence permit and have a registered place of permanent residence in Slovenia or hold a certificate of registration of residence and have a registered place of temporary residence in Slovenia

Registration requirements.

Nationals.  For EP elections, a special electoral register is compiled of Slovenian and mobile EU citizens that have the right to vote.

Slovenian citizens permanently residing abroad may vote in a polling station abroad.

Alternatively, Slovenian citizens residing abroad may vote at a special polling station in Slovenia set up for this purpose by the local electoral commission.

Another option open to them is voting by post from abroad.

In addition, Slovenian citizens permanently residing in Slovenia may be granted the right to vote abroad provided they have informed the national electoral commission in advance of their wish to vote at a diplomatic representative office or consulate abroad.

Mobile EU citizens. EU citizens must register to vote by submitting a request in person or by post to the Ministry of the Interior. When filing a request, they must present proof of identity, such as a A passport, citizenship certificate, birth certificate, or other identification document that proves citizenship. They also need to include a statement that their right to vote has not been revoked. Exclusions

Slovakian nationals and EU citizens can lose their right to vote in Slovakia if they have been deprived of the right to vote by a court decision. Mobile EU citizens who have been deprived of their voting rights in their home Member State cannot vote in EP elections in Slovakia .
